Towards Impressionism: Landscape Painting from Corot to Monet

Keywords: 19th century French painting, Impressionism, Landscape painting, Monet

The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims and the City of Reims have given Art Centre Basel the exclusive right to curate and organize an exhibition, composed of works from the museum’ s collections, and their placement in three distinguished international museums.

The fine arts museum in Reims possesses a fine collection of 19th century French paintings which illustrate the main avant-garde tendencies of that era. History painting had decreased in importance by this time, the two prevailing genres, landscapes and portraits are plentifully  represented by the large number of works, mainly bequests from private collections, which have enriched the museum at regular intervals.

The exhibition presented herein will display 45 works in total, by several School of Barbizon painters active after 1830 and by the small artists’ circle founded by Eugène Boudin in Honfleur, Normandy around 1850, to which Gustave Courbet  belonged. As from the transition to Impressionism our exhibition will also display other excellent paintings from the museum’s collection of Impressionists – Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissarro.

The full list of artists displayed in this exhibition is as follows: Barye, Bertin, Boudin, Corot, Courbet, Daubigny, Diaz de la Peña, Dupré, Harpignies, Jacque, Lépine, Michel, Millet, Monet, Pissarro, Ravier, Renoir, Rousseau, Troyon and Ziem.

To better introduce this development and their influence on the Barbizonists, we have chosen to begin the exhibition by deliberately presenting some works by French Romanticists.
