The exhibition is composed of six parts: Riverside purification ceremony near Lanting; Legends about Lanting; Replicas in Tang Dynasty; Copies in Song Dynasty; Copies by Other Famous Calligraphers; and Lanting, Shaoxing, with the replicas and copies of Preface to Lanting throughout the ages as its core. The carefully-selected influential rubbings of Preface to Lanting systematically show the art of calligraphy in all ages about Lanting.
The exhibition features two components: cultural relics and calligraphy. In terms of calligraphy, the audience can not only see the replicas and copies of Yu Shinan, Chu Suiliang and Feng Chengsu which are closest to the original work, but can enjoy the Copy on “Eight Columns of Lanting” by Emperor Qianlong, which fully demonstrate the lifestyle and spiritual world of the celebrated scholars in Wei and Jin dynasties represented by Wang Xizhi. As for the collection of cultural relics, the liquor ware, stationery, and daily necessities used by the scholars in Jin dynasty have been selected to illustrate the constant pursuit for life of the scholars and scholar-officials in Wei and Jin dynasties, and to mirror the awakened consciousness of the scholars at that time.
