As early as in the ancient times, ancestors knew how to make use of some simple and crude dyes to create petroglyph, and to express their plain ideas and emotions. With the brush-and-ink coming into being, artists of different times could describe their minds more freely. Calligraphy and painting, as a unique and specific art form, integrate with culture of fans and endow the fans a certain dignified and graceful feature.
A wide variety of materials have been used traditionally to carry works of calligraphy and painting, such as paper, silk, bamboo, porcelain and screen, among which fan face expresses a peculiar taste of elegance. The exhibition features selected fan faces of Ming and Qing Dynasties, including calligraphy inscriptions in major traditional script styles and paintings on most subjects—landscape, flowers and plants, figures, etc.—with different techniques, which highlight works at the time by such masters as Ren Xun, Zhao Zhiqian, Wu Changshuo and so on. Visitors may fully enjoy the beauty and taste of the fans and calligraphy and painting works on the fan faces.
