The Realm of Dragon -The Animal in Chinese Art-Treasures from Henan Museum

Keywords: Animal in Art
Comprehensive

The inhabitants of ancient China kept animals for company as well as a source of food and to provide themselves with ‘manpower’, but they also regarded some animals as sacred creatures. Animals had a magical and religious significance and were associated with the world of the gods. The animal world and the spiritual world were brought into contact through rituals. A whole menagerie of protected and cosmic animals plays an important role in Chinese mythology and in human life.

This exhibition features 140 items of cultural relics and 22 pieces of rubbings from Henan Museum, dating from the Shang dynasty to the Qing dynasty, including bronze wares, jade wares, ceramics, ivory carvings, lacquer wares, enamelware, silk fabrics. These artifacts all relate to animals and will provide the audience with an interesting story of animals and a concise picture of Chinese history.
