Settling on the western border, the Xixia Dynasty was established in 1038 by the Tangut people, holding great military forces and dominating in Heshuo. Initially, the Xixia Dynasty stood together with the Song Dynasty and Liao Kingdom, and confronted with Southern Song and Jin in the latter part ofits reign. After many years of fighting and 189 years of prosperity, Xixia shifted its focus to education and the economy, developing a splendid culture.
When Xixia was conquered by ethnic Mongolians in 1227, all precious cultural relics and books were destroyed. As a result, the once-prosperous Xixia Dynasty was covered by historic dust, shrouded in mystery. Since the 20thcentury, many old relics and books have been discovered which record and reflect the Xixia people’s talents and lives. Light has thus been shed on the unique Xixia civilisation, including grand Buddhist buildings, exquisite sculptures, square and complex Xixia characters and beautiful metalware, all holding memories of the Tangut people’s traditions and culture.
