Zhongshan Warship Relics

Keywords: Zhongshan, Warship, Relics

Zhongshan Warship, originally named Yongfeng, was one of the two modern warships customized byJapanfor the Qing Government in 1910. It was renamed Zhongshan in honor of the merits of Dr. Sun Yat-sen (i.e. Sun Zhongshan in Mandarin Chinese) after he passed away. In October 1938, the ship was hit hard by the Japanese bombers during the Battle of Wuhan and sank in the Jinkou waters ofYangtze River. The wreckage lay submerged until it was salvaged as a whole in 1997. During its 26 years’ voyage, Zhongshan Warship witnessed five historic events: Campaign to Defend the Republic (1916), Constitution Protection Movement (1917), Chen Jiongming Incident (1922), Zhong Shanjian Incident (1926) and Battle of Wuhan (1938), which set the tragic and heroic tone of the modern history ofChina.
