Ancient craftsmen invented different techniques in manufacturing paper by using different natural raw materials. Their wisdom and intelligence were embedded in pieces of paper. When reflecting the relations between natural ecosystem and human beings, people come to understand that traditional handicraft embodies mutual respect and trust between man and man, between human beings and animals, and between man and nature. Life created by handicraftsmen is a way of life with “soul” and warmth.
Nevertheless, the revival of folk art has still a long way to go. We have to face old craftsmen’s frustration; meanwhile, we are touched by inheritors’ enthusiasm to carry on the traditional handicrafts. Traditional handicrafts should be understood and respected far more than ever before. In the life of handicraftsmen, creation does not base on a whim, but on traces of endless and continuous life. This exhibition is dedicated to the masters of folk art who hold on to handmade paper techniques and to whom we pay our respect.
