The World on Fingers and in Palms -Exhibition of Puppet Arts in Fujian and Taiwan

Keywords: Arts, Palms, Puppet
History

Chinese puppet shows have a long history, having developed into a variety of forms over hundreds of years. Among them, marionettes and hand puppets from southern Fujian are the most typical, as excellent examples of Chinese intangible cultural heritage.

This exhibition consists of five parts: the origins, transformations, artistry, enjoyment and trends of puppet performance. It includes some 400 objects, including marionettes, hand puppets, puppet caps, costumes, stage models, ancient scripts and book series onpuppetry. They give clear expression to the artistic features of puppet shows in Fujian and Taiwan, to their emergence and evolution, and to the creation and preservation of traditions. Visitors to the exhibition have the opportunity to watch performances by professional ensembles and participate in activities related to puppet making, facial makeup colouring and more. Visitors, especially the young, may be stimulated to understand and appreciate this ancient Chinese folk art.
