Spectacular Exhibition of Dehua Porcelain

Keywords: Dehua Porcelain
History

Dehua, one of the Three Porcelain Capitals in China (the other two are Jingdezhen and Liling.), is situated in the middle of Fujian Province, north of Quanzhou. The history of Dehua porcelain making can date back to late Tang and Five Dynasties and in Song and Yuan, the white glaze and bluish white glaze of Dehua were already world famous. With the expansion of marine trade, Dehua porcelains were exported overseas. In Ming and Qing dynasties, the techniques of porcelain making reached its prime time; the unique plastic arts and the jade-like texture of body and glaze enjoyed great fame and got the name of “Blanc de Chine” (French for “white from China”).

In Ming Dynasty, the body of Dehua porcelain was white, fine and smooth, and the thickness varied in accordance with the wares and vessels of different kinds. Creamy white is the main glazing color, and there are also pure white, greenish white, light grey and so on. Shapes were various and besides the lifelike figural statues, Dehua porcelain was also used as ornaments, in the study and for eating.
