Exhibition of Qingzhou Buddha Statues

Keywords: Qingzhou, Buddha Statues, China

Since 2000, in Qingzhou, some elaborate Buddha statues have been excavated on the sites of Longxing Temple, Guangfu Temple, Xingguo Temple, Qiji Temple, and so on. The statues are made of stone, bronze, pottery, iron, and clay. The Buddha statues with distinctive regional features are mainly those in the periods from late North Wei to North Qi. The special and unique statues in Qingzhou are different from those in Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang, Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, and Yungang Grottoes in Datong, and have attracted attention from academic circle and the society. Among them, the Buddha statues unearthed on the site of Longxing Temple are of vital importance, amounting to 400 pieces and spanning from late North Wei to North Song. These elaborately carved and gilded and painted statues are well preserved, and was awarded one of the Ten New Archeological Findings of China in 1996 and then entered into the list of 100 Significant Archeological Findings of China in 20thCentury. Buddha statues with Qingzhou style—shapes of finely carved high relief with screened back and shapes of single circular engravure—have established the position in the history of Chinese Buddhist art.

Demonstrated in the exhibition are forty-five selected Buddha statues, mainly unearthed on the site of Longxing Temple, including screened back triad images, single circular engravure and so on. Visitors may appreciate better the art features of Buddha statues of Qingzhou Style.
